MES (Manufacturing Execution System) typically consists of multiple levels or layers that work together to provide comprehensive control and visibility over the manufacturing process. The specific levels may vary depending on the system architecture and implementation, but here are the commonly recognized levels of MES:

Enterprise Level:

This is the top-level of the MES hierarchy and typically integrates with the broader enterprise systems such as ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning). It serves as a bridge between the MES and other business systems, facilitating data exchange and providing a centralized platform for decision-making at the enterprise level. It handles functions like production planning, order management, and resource allocation based on business strategies and goals.

Operations Management Level:

The Operations Management level focuses on managing and controlling the execution of manufacturing operations. It includes functionalities for work order management, production scheduling, resource allocation, and overall coordination of shop floor activities. This level ensures that production orders are executed efficiently, resources are allocated optimally, and schedules are met.

Control and Execution Level:

The Control and Execution level is responsible for real-time monitoring, control, and coordination of the manufacturing process on the shop floor. It interfaces with machines, equipment, and sensors to capture real-time data related to production activities, machine status, and quality measurements. It provides operators and supervisors with visibility into the production status, enables control of machine operations, and tracks performance against planned targets.

Equipment Level:

The Equipment level focuses on the integration and control of individual machines, equipment, and devices on the shop floor. It involves connecting and communicating with machines through protocols such as OPC (OLE for Process Control) or specific machine interfaces. This level enables data collection from equipment, monitors machine performance, and supports machine-level control and automation.

Data Collection Level:

The Data Collection level involves capturing data from various sources, such as machines, sensors, operators, and other systems. It includes functionalities for real-time data acquisition, data validation, and data storage. This level ensures that accurate and relevant data is collected for analysis and reporting purposes.

Analysis and Reporting Level:

The Analysis and Reporting level focuses on analyzing the collected data and generating insights and reports related to production performance, quality control, resource utilization, and other key metrics. It includes functionalities for data analysis, visualization, and reporting, which help in identifying trends, bottlenecks, and opportunities for improvement.

These levels in MES work together to provide a comprehensive system for managing and controlling the manufacturing process, from strategic planning at the enterprise level to real-time execution and control on the shop floor. The integration and coordination among these levels enable organizations to optimize production operations, improve efficiency, and achieve operational excellence.
